In February of 1962, Don Beattie, a mechanical engineer, founded Bull Moose Tube Company. The plant began with one tube mill and was originally located in Wellston, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. In 1964, in conjunction with an agreement with the City of Gerald, Missouri to construct a facility, Bull Moose Tube relocated the manufacturing operations there. Six mills and several facility expansions were added over the years.

For the first six years of the company, Don Beattie privately owned Bull Moose. In 1968, Granite City Steel Company of Granite City, Illinois acquired Bull Moose Tube Company. In 1972 National Steel Corporation acquired Granite City Steel. Following the reorganization of National Steel Corporation into National Intergroup in early 1983, Bull Moose Tube became a wholly owned subsidiary of National Intergroup. Also in 1983, the Chicago Heights operation was acquired and a new plant was opened in Trenton, Georgia.

In early 1988, Bull Moose Tube moved its corporate headquarters to Chesterfield, a western suburb of St. Louis. In 1991 Bull Moose Tube proceeded to purchase this office building.

In October of 1988, Caparo Industries Plc. purchased Bull Moose Tube Company. Bull Moose Tube now serves as Caparo's North American base of operations. In late 1989, Barton Tubes, owned by Caparo, in Burlington, Ontario, came under the Bull Moose Tube operation and changed its name to Bull Moose Tube Limited. (Bull Moose Tube collectively refers to Bull Moose Tube Company and Bull Moose Tube Limited.)

The next expansion came in March of 1990 when Bull Moose Tube acquired its structural division in Elkhart, Indiana. The former Bock Industries, Inc. plant nearly doubled the company's production capacity, as well as opened a new product line – structural tubing. This also opened a new market for Bull Moose Tube, international sales. This expansion gave Bull Moose Tube the largest size range of products in the industry, ½" square through 12" square x 5/8" wall, and makes Bull Moose Tube one of the largest and most dominant tubing manufacturers in North America.

In May 1997, Bull Moose Tube established a new subsidiary, Warren Tube Company, to acquire the Warren Tubular operation in Warren, Ohio. During 1998, this operation, consisting of 2 mechanical mills, was relocated to Masury, Ohio.

The Trenton facility was expanded and a structural mill added to the operation in 1998 and the facility was again expanded in 2005, to strengthen Bull Moose Tube's commitment to being a leader in regional tube production and to being close to the customer. In addition, to further enhance customer service, the Elkhart operations were consolidated during 1999 into one expanded location comprising 302,000 square feet. In 2006, the Elkhart operation was expanded to 355,000 square feet with the addition of over 50,000 square feet of warehousing space.

In 2004, Bull Moose Tube realized their long-term strategy of expanding to the West with the acquisition of a 125,000 sq. ft. facility in Casa Grande, Arizona.  The facility, midway between Phoenix and Tucson, will produce and stock a full line of sprinkler pipe products along with a stock of Elkhart and Trenton produced Hollow Structural Sections. In 2005, the facility was expanded to 175,000 square feet to satisfy demand for Bull Moose Tube products on the West Coast.

The company's seven plants are equipped with 17 mills, which have an annual capacity of over 750,000 tons.

Don Beattie, who founded Bull Moose Tube Company in 1962, wanted an unforgettable name and slogan that would symbolize the Company's commitment to offer the highest quality products and service. He became intrigued with the General Bullmoose character in Al Capps Comic Strip, "Lil Abner.: The General was noted for saying – "What's good for General Bullmoose is good for the U.S.A." To Don Beattie, that phrase needed only a slight adjustment to become the slogan he wanted – "What's good for the CUSTOMER is good for BULL MOOSE!" Needless to say, he had his unforgettable name for the new company.
