Interview with Mark Abernathy

Interview with Mark Abernathy On December 20, 2018, global-standards creator ASTM International officially designated ASTM A1112/A1112M-18 standards covering new alloys, including cold-formed welded high-strength carbon steel, low-alloy steel hollow structural sections (HSS) among others. This is great news for Bull Moose Tube, as our Stratusteel® line of steel tube is among those new alloys that will now be covered by this new standard, making it much easier for structural engineers to validate using Stratusteel in their designs. But there’s another reason that we at Bull Moose Tube should be excited about this new standard: it was created with the help of our own Mark Abernathy! In fact, Mark has worked on several standards projects with ASTM over the course of the past several years. He recently shared his experiences with ASTM and his work on ASTM A1112/A1112M-18: Questions for Mark Abernathy How were you selected to participate in the development of ASTM standards for HSS/Stratusteel? It’s pretty

Bull Moose helps ASTM Create New Steel Standards

Bull Moose Tube assists ASTM International to create new standards for steel structural tubes Specifications for previously uncategorized alloys will make it easier for structural engineers to incorporate these new products into designs Bull Moose Tube, a leading manufacturer of steel pipe and tube, has received permission by global standards developer ASTM International to announce the organization’s development of new standards for steel structural tubes. These new standards, covering cold-formed welded high-strength carbon steel, low-alloy steel hollow structural sections (HSS) among others, will be put in place before the end of 2018. For more than a year, Bull Moose Tube Manager of Field Applications Mark Abernathy assisted ASTM International in the development of these standards by serving as a member of its committee on steel, stainless steel and related alloys. According to Abernathy, the new standards will have a tremendous impact on the construction industry – particularly as it relates

Bull Moose Steel Tubes Can Now Earn LEED Points

Our steel tubes have always earned points for strength. Now they can earn points for LEED certification. Bull Moose® Tube has earned an environmental product declaration (EPD) from Underwriters Laboratories — making Bull Moose the only manufacturer in the HSS field with EPD certification.  This is particularly significant for building owners and contractors seeking LEED points, because EPDs for Materials and Resources are actually required in the new LEEDv4 standards that become mandatory on October 31, 2016. Our entire HSS product line, which includes the Stratusteel range of high-strength, ultra-lightweight tube, can now help projects earn those LEED credits. This advantage springs from the environmental considerations observed by Bull Moose throughout the production of our hollow structural section products. The EPD qualification was based on a variety of factors, including: how our raw materials are sourced, the extent of recycled materials utilized in our production, our scrap reclamation processes, the integrity of our manufacturing

The Industry’s First EPD-Certified Sprinkler Pipe

The Industry’s First EPD-Certified Sprinkler Pipe Bull Moose® Tube has earned an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) from  Underwriters Laboratories — making Bull Moose pipe the only manufacturer in the sprinkler pipe field with EPD certification. The EPD qualification was based on a variety of factors, including: how our raw materials are sourced, the extent of recycled materials utilized in our production, our scrap reclamation processes, the integrity of our manufacturing practices, and so on. Ultimately, these criteria enabled UL to assess the environmental impacts of our product across its entire life cycle. With
